OPPORTUNITIES FOR LAW STUDENTS

1. Morris Odeh Annual Essay Competition

The Law Students Association of Nigeria (LAWSAN) Directorate of Policies, Programs and Projects presents the Morris Odeh Annual Essay Competition, and is calling on all Nigerian Undergraduate Law Students to submit a well structured essay on the topic: “The Covid-19 Pandemic and the Oil & Gas Sector”.

Rules

1. Submissions are open to only Nigerian undergraduate Law Students.
2. The essay must not be more than 1,500 words maximum, double-space, (double spaced and 12pt Times New Roman).
3. References in the essay should be included and clearly identified.
4. Entries must be submitted in word format only.
5. Details of the entrants should be included in the body of the mail, and not on the essay. Details include; names of participants, level, phone number and school.
6. There will be a winner, a first runner up, and a second runner up.
7. The topic for the essay competition should be the subject matter.
8. No collaboration or joint work is allowed.
9. Only one entry per entrant is allowed.
10. No plagiarism, in whole or part, will be acceptable, as that would lead to rejection of a submission.
11. Submissions that do not Follow the guidelines will be disregarded.
12. Only successful participants will be contacted.
13. Deadline for the submissions is 28th of April, 2020.

2. YALI RLC West Africa Emerging Leaders Program

The Young African Leaders Initiative (YALI) was launched by the United States government as a signature effort to invest in the next generation of African leaders. Applications are open for the YALI RLC Accra Cohort. Programmes offered include: Business and Entrepreneurship; Civil Society Management; and Public Policy and Management. Please note: Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the cohort training will be online.

Competition for the YALI Regional Leadership Center West Africa is merit-based and open to young West African leaders who meet the following criteria:

• Are 18 to 35 years of age at the time of application submission,
• Are citizens and residents of one of the following countries: Ghana, Nigeria, Togo, Ivory Coast, Cameroon, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Burkina Faso.
• Are not U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.
• Are eligible to receive any necessary visa to Ghana, and
• Are proficient in reading, writing, listening and speaking English

Selection panels will use the following criteria to evaluate applications:

• Demonstrated leadership in public service, business and entrepreneurship, or civic engagement.
• Active engagement in public or community service, volunteerism, or mentorship.
• The ability to work cooperatively in diverse groups and respect the opinions of others.
• Strong social and communication skills.
• An energetic, positive attitude.
• A demonstrated knowledge, interest, and professional experience in the sector/track selected, and
• A commitment to apply leadership skills and training to benefit your country and/or community after the program.

3. Abel Akpedeye Essay Competition

Compos Mentis Chambers presents the first edition of ABEL O. AKPEDEYE ESSAY COMPETITION for Law Students across all Nigerian Universities.

The topic of the essay is GLOBAL EPIDEMIC: CORONAVIRUS, THE LAW AND ECONOMY.

Intending participants are expected to follow Compos Mentis Chambers on two social media platforms to be eligible for the competition. (Below are the Chambers social media accounts)

A total cash prize of N1 MILLION is to be won.

Participants are advised to adhere strictly to the entry rules as default in any of the rules will lead to automatic disqualification.

THE ENTRY RULES ARE AS FOLLOWS:

1. The competition is open to Law Students of all Universities in Nigeria.
2. Entrants must be currently enrolled to study law in any Nigerian university and must have commenced their course of study. Entrants will be required to upload evidence that they are current students.
3. The maximum word count is 2500 words.
4. Entries must be written in English language.
5. Only one entry per participant is allowed. Once an essay is submitted, entrants will not have the opportunity to revise it. Please carefully check and proof read your essay before submitting the final copy, and also ensure that all supplementary information is filled in correctly (name, contact details, topic number, etc.)
6. Compos Mentis Chambers maintains a strict rule against plagiarism in the competition. Any evidence of plagiarism will lead to automatic disqualification.
7. Final documents should not include the entrants personal details including name, age, school or country. This information should be inputted upon entry.
8. The final copy submitted for the competition must be the entrant’s own work, and cannot be excessively corrected or improved by another person. This does not rule out input or assistance from others but does exclude group entries.
9. Essays can only be uploaded as a Microsoft Word document (.doc or .docx). The online platform does not accept Google Docs (.gdoc), Pages documents (.pages) or other word processor formats. Note: if the organizers are unable to find or open your essay (either through an incorrect format or upload error), your essay will not be entered as part of the competition.
10. All entries must be written on and relevant to the supplied theme.
11. All entries must be submitted between 4th March, 2020 and 30th April, 2020.
12. All entrants retain the copyright for the pieces they submit, but by entering the Essay Competition, each contestant consents to the use of his/her name, and/or essay or parts thereof in any advertisements, educational materials, corpus research or media and publicity carried out or produced by Compos Mentis Chambers.
13. The organizers suggest that entrants retain a copy of their original work as we are unable to return or provide copies of submissions.
14. The total cash prize available for winners is N1 million. However, Compos Mentis Chambers retains the right to change the prize of the competition at any time without notice.

5. YNAG Generation Y Governorship Essay Competition

YNAG announces the 2020 Generation Y Governorship Essay Competition. This initiative aims to celebrate excellence among young people (18-35 years), by recognizing the best ideas that can promote socio-economic progress of their states. The essay competition probes the thoughts of young people and engage their ideas for a better society and country.

Applicants are to write on the topic: “As a gubernatorial candidate in 2023, write between 800 to 1,500 words manifesto for your state.”
