OPPORTUNITIES FOR LAW STUDENTS AND LAWYERS IN AUGUST 2020
1. Christian Aniukwu Essay Competition
The Intellectual Property Law Club, UNIOSUN, in line with its objectives of engaging students in the field of Intellectual Property Law, is pleased to announce the maiden edition of its essay competition.
The topic for the essay competition is Nigerian Copyright Act: The Need for an Effective Licensing System in the Digital Age.
Modalities
- The Essay is open to all Law Undergraduates in Nigeria.
- Please note that the entries should be no longer than 1500 words and must be submitted in Microsoft Word/PDF format and typed in Times New Roman font size 12 for your entry to be deemed valid.
- All entries should be free from any sort of plagiarism.
- All entries must not have been previously published either online or in any print to be deemed a valid entry for the competition.
- All entries are to be submitted to the official email address of the IPLC (iplcosunstateuniversity@gmail.com) on or before 28th August by 11:59pm. Any entry submitted after this time will be disqualified from the competition.
- All winners will be contacted by email and announced during a special webinar session.

2. Chartered Institute of Personnel Management of Nigeria 2020 Essay Competition
The CIPM is currently accepting applications from suitably qualified candidates for CIPM Annual Essay Competition for Undergraduates 2020. The topic for the Essay Competition is People Risk Management Strategies in an Era of Crisis.
Modalities
- Interested persons must be UNDERGRADUATES of Nigerian Universities and Polytechnics.
- Essay must be original, empirical and of local and international journal standard.
- The length of the essay must not exceed 3000 words with proper referencing using the APA style of referencing.
- The font type must be Times New Roman in 12 points font size.
- All entries should be typed in double line spacing, using MS word ONLY.
- Plagiarism in all forms is prohibited and will attract outright disqualification of indicted entries.
- The Deadline for submission of entries is September 11, 2020.
- Past winners are not eligible to participate.
Applicants are required to send a soft copy of their entry alongside scanned copies of (i) I.D Card from the participants’ current Institution (ii) Copy of admission letter to their current institution (iii) One recent passport sized photograph and

3. The Policy Competition 2020
The Policy Competition was conceived as a platform for the grooming and harvesting of ideas on solving some of Nigeria’s developmental challenges from its youth population. The organizers believe that the state of affairs of our dear country Nigeria presents a challenge to the creativity, intelligence and resourcefulness of the Nigerian Youth. The Policy Competition thus aims to galvanize the Nigerian Youth to accept this challenge through active participation in the public policy process.

Modalities
- This competition is open to all undergraduate students currently enrolled in a tertiary institution in Nigeria.
- No application fee is required.
- Submission of entries will be via www.policy.ng
- All applications should not contain more than 2000 words, excluding citations.
- The submission deadline of all applications is September 10, 2020.
- Shortlisted applicants will be contacted via email provided.
- You are required to show proof that you are a student by either providing your statement of result or your student identity card.
- Participants are expected to register on the portal. Submissions must be made by a team of at least two students.

4. The Olumuyiwa Olatokunbo Olowokure Esq. Essay Competition
The maiden edition of the Olumuyiwa Olatokunbo Olowokure Esq Essay Competition has been announced for young lawyers. The topic for the essay competition is Repositioning Nigerian Legal Education for a Globally Competitive Legal Market in the 21st Century. There is a cash prize of ₦150,000 for the winners of the competition.
Modalities
- The Essay Competition is open to young Nigerian lawyers with no more than 5 year post-qualification experience.
- Essays must be submitted in English and typed Calibri Font Type, Font Size 12, 1.5 line spacing amd Justified Alignment.
- References must be made in footnotes following the Oxford Standard for Citing Legal Authorities (OSCOLA) referencing style. Footnotes are to be typed in Times New Roman font, font size 10.
- The word count is 1500 words, excluding references. An essay less than 1000 words, excluding footnotes, is not encouraged.
- 2 copies of an entry (1 Microsoft Word and 1 PDF) should be submitted to oluwatobi@olowokure.com.
- The deadline for submission is September 18, 2020.
5. Prof. Gbolahan Elias SAN Essay Competition
Diverse Law has announced the Maiden Edition of Prof. Gbolahan Elias SAN Essay Competition. The competition is open to all Undergraduates of Law in Nigerian Universities. The topic for the Essay is Taxation of Digital Activities: An Evaluation of the Nigerian Approach in a Global Context.
Modalities
- Entries must be in English Language.
- Entries are to be in Microsoft Word format, typed in Times New Roman font, 12pt font size and double spaced.
- Word count should not exceed 1200 words.
- References must be in footnotes following the OSCOLA referencing style.
- Plagiarism will lead to disqualification.
- A valid student ID must be attached to the body of the mail when submitting an entry.
- Applicants are expected to follow Diverse Law on all social media platforms.
- Entries are to be submitted to diverselaw.essay@gmail.com
- Deadline for submissions is September 6, 2020.

6. NBA-YLF Arbitration Challenge 2020
“The Arbitration Challenge is aimed at stimulating the practice of international commercial dispute resolution mechanisms among young lawyers with a focus on the role of legal practitioners in foreign investments in Nigeria.”
Each branch of the NBA interested in the Arbitration Challenge shall be entitled to register a single team consisting of no more than 5 individuals between 5 August 2020 and 1 September 2020 on the portal provided for registrations.
Each individual member of any team shall not be above seven (7) years of post qualification experience.
Visit the registration portal to register and participate in the Challenge. Deadline is September 1, 2020.
7. OMAPLEX Law Firm Virtual Internship 2020
OMAPLEX Law Firm is currently accepting applications into its virtual internship programme.
The virtual internship by OMAPLEX Law Firm is a work experience program whereby Participants (interns) gain experience while working virtually.
The Virtual Internship intends to provide various opportunities for interns to learn more about the operations of a Legal Business, by carrying out basic activities that may include mastering the skill of Proof reading documents, Drafting, Presentations/Proposals, Research, sorting through documents and more.
To apply:
- Record a two minute video introducing yourself, telling the firm why you want to be a part of the virtual internship and stating your expectation(s) of the law practice in the next five years.
- Upload it to any of your preferred social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn).

- Complete the application form on the registration portal, upload your resume and paste the link to the video in the space provided for video link.

8. 2nd Edition of the Adavize Alao Essay Competition on Data Protection
Lawyard is currently accepting submissions for the 2nd Edition of the Adavize Alao Essay Competition on Data Protection. The competition is divided into two categories: Young Lawyers with 1-5 years post-call experience and Law Students including students of the Nigerian Law School.
The topic for the Young Lawyer Category is “Keeping Up with the Dynamics: How has Nigeria Fared in Data Protection So Far?”. The topic for the Law Students Category is “Rethinking Data Protection in Nigeria: Gaps and Opportunities”.
Modalities
- The word count for the Young Lawyer Category is 2000 words (including footnotes) while the word count for the Law Students Category is 1500 words (including footnotes).
- Submissions must be in Microsoft Word format (Arial font type, font size 11, 1.5 line spacing, Justified Alignment.
- All references must be in OSCOLA referencing style.
- The first page of the submission must be separate from the essay. For young lawyers, the front page is to include full name, year of call, phone number and e-mail address of the author. For law students, the front page is to include full name, school of study, phone number and e-mail address of the author.
- Submissions must be original, independent and unpublished works. Co-authored submissions are not allowed.

- Winner of the Lawyer Category gets ₦200,000
- Winner of the Law Student Category gets ₦100,000
